October 11th every year is marked as International Girl Child Day celebrated around the globe.
The Young Urban Women`s Movement in the Bono Region collaborated with ActionAid Ghana to celebrate in the Bono Region under the theme “Model Girls Schools; Promoting safe space for girls` education and leadership”, held at Tyco City Hotel Yesterday, commemorate this day, which girl students from some government schools in Sunyani met, to be educated on the use of the internet, to its positive effect.

Speaking in an interview Rev Dr. Gilbert Mensah, at the IT Directorate of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), urged that, the current use of social media and the internet highly influence the youth, mostly the girls, hence parents must ensure they guide their wards on the use of the internet, to prevent exposing them to porn and other bad acts on the net.

On his part, the Bono Regional Director for ActionAid Ghana, Mr. Kwame Afram Denkyira hinted at the need to educate a child, saying that, education is the foundation upon which a prosperous Nation is built, and it is the fundamental right of every child to receive a formal education, regardless of how they are, hence the need for every child to receive a formal education, especially girls.

Students who participated in the forum spoke to Boaditv.com reporter indicating that teenage pregnancy has been the major factor that affects the education purposes of the girl-child, therefore school-going girls need to refrain from early sex and other activities that expose them to teenage pregnancy to have a brighter future.

The students attributed early sexual exposure of the girl child to family hardship and peer influence and later pleaded with authorities to extend helping hands to brilliant but needy girls in the school to help them achieve their successes without necessarily relying on men for survival that eventually get them pregnant and end their schooling journey.
